Are you experiencing an Orthodontic Emergency?
If so, then please call our office as soon as possible if you have broken or a loose appliance. We recommend you call us immediately at (587) 349-5858 to notify us so we can arrange to see you as soon as possible.
Common Orthodontic Emergencies
- Loose Bracket or Bands – please call us immediately if a brace or wire is loosened. The brace will need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. You may need to have a wire cut or sliding of a bracket of wire, especially overnight or over the weekend. If you need to, cut the wire using a fingernail clipper that has been washed and sterilized in alcohol. Please call us as soon as possible so we can schedule an appointment for you.
- Wire Irritations – sometimes discomfort can be caused by a wire on your braces. You can move the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire does not move, try covering the end with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. If the wire is painful, cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol.
- Lost Separators – most patients lose a separator over the course of their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office as soon as possible to see if it needs to be replaced.
- Discomfort from Orthodontic Treatment – during the first day or so after your braces have been placed and routine adjustments are complete, you may feel some pain, soreness or discomfort. Take acetaminophen or some other non-aspirin pain reliever till you adjust to your new braces. A warm washcloth or a heating pad may also reduce the soreness in your jaw. If the pain persists, please call us immediately.
